Precision Mold Processing in Those Inseparable Machining Processes

Sep 26, 2022

It is impossible to separate those studying sophisticated processing technology equipment from the precision mold for processing development. The primary methods used in the machining of precision molds are CNC milling, slow-walk wire cutting, EDM, grinding, lathe, measuring, and others.

1. CNC milling processing

A very complex three-dimensional complex surface can be processed using a traditional ordinary milling machine, a three-axis machining center, and finally, a five-axis high-speed milling machine and the material hardness limitations are getting smaller and smaller.

2. Slow-walking wire-cutting processing

Slow-walking wire cutting is mostly utilized in the production of two- and three-dimensional linear parts in various stamping, plastic, and powder metallurgy molds. Insert holes, ejector holes, slant top holes, cavity clearance angles, and sliders are frequently used in the construction of injection molds.

3. EDM processing

Complex objects with finely detailed small cavities, narrow slits, recesses, and corners can be machined with EDM. EDM process is superior to milling when the tool is challenging to process to the complicated surface, the necessity for deep cuts, and the long diameter ratio is particularly high. Recharging the milling electrode increases productivity and is less expensive than purchasing expensive equipment for EDM.

4. Processing with a grinding machine

In particular for treating hardened objects, grinding machines are precise surface-processing tools. The primary grinders used in mold processing are surface grinders, universal internal and external cylindrical grinders, and coordinate grinders (pg optical curve grinders).

Precision inserts die cores, and slides are just a few examples of the small mold components that are typically processed using small flat grinders. Processing large-sized templates typically involve the use of large water grinders. The standard has evolved to include both the high-speed movement of the table and the linear speed of the surface grinder's grinding wheel. The introduction of cutting-edge functional component technology, such as linear guides, linear motors, and hydrostatic screws, has greatly increased movement speed and enhanced grinding wheel dressing techniques.

5. CNC lathe

A frequent processing tool in an injection mold workshop is the CNC lathe. Programming simultaneously makes it simple to create the intricate design of the rotating body, and the machine tool can replace tools automatically, greatly increasing the productivity of molds. Manufacturing information technology difficulties and CNC lathe processing accuracy are getting better and better.

6. Measuring devices

From digital mapping to mold process measurement, to mold acceptance measurement, and finally mold repair measurement, high precision measuring equipment plays a crucial part in the early stages of precision plastic mold design.
