Common processes of aluminum alloy surface treatment

Jun 20, 2022

More and more metal materials are used in product design, and the commonly used metal materials are stainless steel, aluminum alloy, pure aluminum profile, zinc alloy, brass, etc. What are the common processes for aluminum alloy surface treatment? This time mainly introduces several common surface treatment processes of aluminum and aluminum alloys.

I once saw a video about how the shell of an apple notebook computer is processed from a whole piece of aluminum alloy through a numerical control processing equipment, with multiple surface treatments. The processes involved include numerical control milling, polishing, high gloss milling, wire drawing and other main processes.

For aluminum and aluminum alloy, surface treatment mainly includes high gloss milling or high gloss cutting, sandblasting, polishing, wire drawing, anodizing, spraying, etc.

1.Highlight milling or highlight cutting

Use high-precision CNC machining equipment to cut some details of aluminum or aluminum alloy parts, so as to produce local highlight areas on the product surface. For example, the metal shell of some mobile phones is milled with a circle of highlight chamfer, and the metal appearance of some small parts is milled with one or several bright and shallow straight grooves, so as to increase the brightness of the product surface. This highlight milling process is also applied to the metal frame of some high-end TVs. During high gloss milling / high gloss cutting, the rotation speed of the milling cutter is more exquisite. The faster the rotation speed is, the brighter the cutting highlight is. On the contrary, it will not produce any highlight effect and is prone to knife marks. Therefore, we have specialized in CNC milling of aluminum parts to help deal with more details.

2. Sandblasting

Sand blasting process refers to the use of the impact of high-speed sand flow to treat the metal surface, including cleaning and roughening the metal surface, so that the surface of aluminum and aluminum alloy parts can obtain a certain degree of cleanliness and roughness.

3.Polishing

Polishing is a processing method that uses mechanical, chemical or electrochemical effects to reduce the surface roughness of the workpiece to obtain a bright and flat surface.

4.Anodic oxidation

In most cases, aluminum parts containing aluminum and aluminum alloys are not suitable for electroplating. Instead of electroplating, aluminum parts are treated by chemical methods of anodic oxidation.

5.wire drawing

Surface drawing process is a mature process. It is a surface treatment process that forms regular lines on the surface of metal workpiece by grinding to achieve decorative effect.

6.Spraying

The purpose of aluminum surface spraying is not only to protect the surface of aluminum parts, but also to improve the appearance effect of aluminum parts. Spraying treatment of aluminum parts mainly includes electrophoretic coating, electrostatic powder coating, electrostatic liquid phase coating and fluorocarbon coating.
